The Fosi Audio SK02 is a compact desktop DAC and headphone amplifier designed for users who want more headphone-focused features than a basic USB audio adapter.

At around $100, its headline features include an ESS SABRE ES9038Q2M DAC, SGM8262 amplification, 3.5mm single-ended and 4.4mm balanced headphone outputs, high and low gain modes, USB and optical inputs, and support for high-resolution PCM and DSD playback.

Compared with Fosi's gaming-oriented K5 Pro, the SK02 takes a noticeably different approach. There is no microphone input or bass and treble control. Instead, the emphasis shifts toward headphone amplification, balanced output and high-resolution digital audio.

Review note: Blog60s has not conducted hands-on testing of the Fosi Audio SK02. This article is a research-based review using manufacturer specifications, official product information, and publicly available documentation. Manufacturer performance claims are not presented as independent Blog60s measurements or listening tests. Prices, ratings, availability, and specifications may change over time.

Fosi Audio SK02 at a Glance

The SK02 combines a desktop USB DAC, headphone amplifier and line-output functionality in a relatively small enclosure.

Its most notable feature at this price is the inclusion of both 3.5mm single-ended and 4.4mm balanced headphone outputs.

The device also supports USB playback up to 32-bit/384kHz PCM and DSD256, while optical input supports up to 24-bit/192kHz according to Fosi's published specifications.

Compact Vertical Desktop Design

The SK02 has an unusual form factor compared with many conventional desktop DACs.

Rather than placing most controls on a horizontal front panel, Fosi puts the large volume knob, gain control, mode selection and status indicators on the top surface.

The SK02 uses a narrow desktop design with its main controls positioned on top.

This arrangement makes sense when the unit is positioned beside a keyboard or laptop because the large volume knob remains easy to reach from above.

At approximately 121 × 51 × 43mm, the SK02 also occupies relatively little desk width.

Blog60s has not independently evaluated its build quality, knob resistance, long-term durability or thermal behavior.

Large Multifunction Volume Knob

One of the most visible parts of the SK02 is its oversized volume control.

The large multifunction knob is designed for quick desktop volume adjustment.

The top panel also provides dedicated controls for gain and operating mode, while indicator lights display information including input mode and digital audio format.

This is a different philosophy from the K5 Pro, which uses three front-facing knobs for bass, treble and volume.

The SK02 sacrifices those tone controls in favor of a simpler headphone-focused interface.

ESS SABRE ES9038Q2M DAC

Fosi specifies the ESS SABRE ES9038Q2M as the DAC used inside the SK02, together with SGM8262 amplification.

Fosi advertises an ES9038Q2M DAC and SGM8262 amplification stage inside the SK02.

The manufacturer also publishes performance figures including THD of no more than 0.001% at 1kHz and signal-to-noise figures that vary according to output and gain configuration.

These specifications are useful for understanding the intended technical performance of the device, but they should not be treated as measurements performed by Blog60s.

DAC chip selection alone also does not determine final sound quality. Power supply implementation, analog circuitry, output stage, gain structure and other engineering decisions contribute to overall performance.

3.5mm and 4.4mm Headphone Outputs

The SK02 provides two headphone connections.

The SK02 includes both 3.5mm single-ended and 4.4mm balanced headphone outputs.

The 3.5mm connection is compatible with conventional wired headphones and IEMs.

The 4.4mm connection is intended for headphones or IEM cables terminated for balanced output.

At 32 ohms, Fosi's current specifications list approximately 190mW from the 3.5mm output and 755mW from the 4.4mm output.

That is a substantial difference in specified output power.

However, users should not conclude that 4.4mm automatically provides better sound.

Balanced output can provide additional available power depending on the amplifier architecture, but whether that produces a meaningful benefit depends on the headphone, listening level and implementation.

High and Low Gain

The SK02 includes selectable high and low gain modes.

This makes the amplifier easier to adapt to different headphones.

Low gain is generally the more appropriate starting point for sensitive headphones and IEMs, while high gain provides additional voltage gain for more demanding headphones.

The important distinction is that gain and power are not the same thing.

Higher gain does not automatically improve audio quality, and using more gain than necessary can reduce useful volume-control range or make background noise easier to notice with sensitive earphones.

Blog60s has not independently measured the SK02's noise floor with sensitive IEMs.

Can the SK02 Drive 300-Ohm Headphones?

Fosi specifies a supported headphone impedance range of 16–300 ohms.

That indicates the SK02 is designed to work with everything from relatively low-impedance headphones to some higher-impedance desktop models.

However, impedance alone does not determine how difficult a headphone is to drive.

Sensitivity is also important.

Two 300-ohm headphones can have different power requirements, just as some low-impedance planar headphones can require more current than their impedance number suggests.

The 16–300Ω specification should therefore be treated as a compatibility guideline rather than a guarantee that every headphone in that range will achieve the same performance or listening level.

PCM 384kHz and DSD256 Support

High-resolution digital audio is another major difference between the SK02 and K5 Pro.

Through USB, the SK02 supports PCM up to 32-bit/384kHz as well as DSD256, according to Fosi.

Optical input supports lower maximum digital rates, with published support up to 24-bit/192kHz.

This gives the SK02 considerably broader high-resolution format support than the K5 Pro's USB implementation.

But maximum sample rate should not be treated as a direct sound-quality score.

A well-mastered 16-bit/44.1kHz recording can sound better than a poorly produced high-resolution file.

The value here is primarily compatibility: the SK02 can accept a wide range of digital formats without requiring conversion to a lower supported rate first.

USB and Optical Inputs

The SK02 keeps input selection relatively simple.

USB-C is the primary connection for computers and compatible digital devices, while optical provides an alternative for equipment with S/PDIF output.

This makes it suitable for a desktop computer but also allows integration with devices such as compatible TVs, CD/DVD players and other digital sources.

Compared with the K5 Pro, however, the SK02 does not provide a coaxial digital input.

Users who specifically require coaxial S/PDIF should account for that difference.

What About IEMs?

The SK02's 3.5mm output and low-gain mode make it relevant to wired IEM users as well as full-size headphone owners.

Its 4.4mm output is also useful for IEMs supplied with balanced cables, such as some higher-end audio models.

For someone building a desktop system around IEMs, the ability to switch gain and use either connection format is attractive.

However, sensitive IEMs can expose amplifier hiss and channel behavior more readily than many full-size headphones.

Because Blog60s has not independently measured those characteristics, buyers intending to use extremely sensitive IEMs should consult independent measurements where available.

Can the SK02 Be Used With Speakers?

Yes, but the signal chain matters.

The SK02 can serve as a source for powered speakers or a separate power amplifier.

The SK02 can provide line-level audio for an external audio system.

For powered speakers, the SK02 can feed the speakers through the appropriate analog connection.

For passive speakers, a separate power amplifier is required.

The basic arrangement is:

Computer / Digital Source → SK02 → Power Amplifier → Passive Speakers

or:

Computer / Digital Source → SK02 → Active Speakers

The SK02 itself is a headphone amplifier, not a speaker power amplifier.

It should not be connected directly to conventional passive speakers as though it were an integrated speaker amplifier.

SK02 vs a Portable USB Dongle

Portable USB dongles have an obvious advantage: size.

They are easier to carry and often draw power directly from a phone or laptop without taking up meaningful desk space.

The SK02 is designed around a different use case.

Its large physical volume control, selectable gain, optical input, 3.5mm output and 4.4mm balanced output make more sense as part of a permanent desktop setup.

For someone who only needs to connect an IEM to a smartphone, the SK02 is probably more hardware than necessary.

For someone who regularly switches between headphones or wants a physical desktop controller, its form factor becomes more useful.

What About Gaming?

The SK02 can certainly be used for game audio when connected to a compatible computer or digital source.

Its wired headphone outputs also avoid Bluetooth audio latency.

But unlike the K5 Pro, the SK02 is not built around microphone integration.

There is no dedicated microphone input.

That distinction is important for headset users.

A gamer who needs headphone amplification plus an analog microphone input may find the K5 Pro's design more convenient.

A user who already has a separate USB microphone—or who primarily wants higher-resolution music playback and balanced headphone output—may find the SK02's feature set more relevant.

SK02 vs K5 Pro: What Is the Main Difference?

Although both products are compact Fosi Audio desktop DAC/headphone amplifiers, they target somewhat different users.

The K5 Pro emphasizes gaming and general desktop flexibility.

It provides a microphone input, bass and treble controls, USB-C, optical, coaxial input and RCA output.

The SK02 shifts toward headphone and Hi-Fi functionality.

It adds 4.4mm balanced headphone output, high/low gain, PCM up to 32-bit/384kHz and DSD256 support.

It does not provide the K5 Pro's microphone input, tone controls or coaxial input.

This means the more appropriate choice depends less on which model has the larger specification numbers and more on the intended setup.

A gamer using a wired headset has different requirements from a headphone listener using a 4.4mm balanced cable.

Who Should Consider the Fosi Audio SK02?

The SK02 is most relevant to desktop headphone listeners who want both 3.5mm and 4.4mm outputs without moving into a much larger DAC/amplifier stack.

It also makes sense for users with high-resolution local music libraries, because USB support extends to PCM 32-bit/384kHz and DSD256.

Owners of multiple headphones may appreciate the high/low gain selection and physical volume control.

The SK02 is less compelling for someone who specifically needs a microphone input, physical tone controls, coaxial input or gaming-headset integration.

Those requirements point more naturally toward the K5 Pro or another gaming-focused DAC.

Is the Fosi Audio SK02 Worth Considering?

At around $100, the SK02 offers a feature set centered on desktop headphone listening rather than trying to function as an all-purpose gaming audio interface.

The ES9038Q2M DAC, 4.4mm balanced connection, selectable gain and broad digital-format support are the main reasons to consider it.

Its limitations are equally clear. There is no microphone input, Bluetooth, coaxial input or dedicated bass and treble adjustment.

For users who actually need those features, specification advantages such as 384kHz PCM or DSD256 are unlikely to compensate for missing connectivity.

For headphone listeners whose priorities are balanced output, high-resolution USB support and straightforward physical control, the SK02 is a more focused alternative to Fosi's K5 Pro.

The next question is therefore not simply whether the SK02 is good on paper, but whether its headphone-focused feature set is more useful than the K5 Pro's gaming-oriented connectivity.

That is the comparison we will examine next.
